The Problem and Solution
The problem with many traditional photography courses is the limited engagement, interactivity, and the inability to meet learners where they are. This results in a passive learning experience for beginners, with many learners struggling to find ways to explore topics of interest and engage with the course content at their own pace.
To address this problem, the solution was to implement an ASK System (Asking, Seeking, and Knowledge-building) within the photography course. This system aimed to enhance learner engagement by incorporating interactive questioning and self-directed exploration of relevant photography concepts.
The ASK System provided a solution by organizing the course content around three main questions and several sub-questions, all focused on manual photography. Learners were encouraged to actively explore these questions, seeking answers and knowledge that aligned with their individual interests and needs. This approach empowered learners to pursue topics they found relevant or compelling, creating a more personalized and meaningful learning experience.
To implement the ASK System, Articulate Rise was chosen as the primary authoring tool. Its user-friendly interface and interactive features allowed for easy navigation and slick interactions, enhancing learner engagement and facilitating self-directed learning.
The Process
To develop the Photography ASK System, I conducted a needs assessment to understand the requirements and preferences of potential learners for a beginner’s course on photography essentials. This involved utilizing surveys and consultations with subject matter experts to gather comprehensive insights into the learners’ backgrounds, goals, and challenges.
Based on the needs assessment findings, I broke down the identified learning objectives into a series of carefully crafted questions and sub-questions. These questions provided a structured learning path, guiding learners through the essential concepts and techniques of photography.

The Results
By conducting a thorough needs assessment and developing a well-structured framework of questions and sub-questions, the photography ASK System was customized to cater to the specific needs of beginner learners. This approach resulted in a learning experience that aligned the course content with learners’ expectations and goals.
Furthermore, the ASK System provided a flexible learning experience, allowing learners to navigate through the questions and sub-questions at their own pace. This flexibility empowered learners to explore topics of interest, dive deeper into areas of curiosity, and choose their learning path within the course. The interactive nature of the system facilitated an adaptable and personalized learning journey, enhancing learner satisfaction and knowledge retention.
