Carmen Sandiego was the perfect theme for this passion project inspired by my love of GeoGuessr and serious games.
I knew from the start that the leading game mechanic would be players exploring Google Street View maps and guessing which country Carmen was in. It took some time finding maps that were reasonably (but not too easily!) recognizable and had enough mapped out streets for people to explore. The biggest challenge, however, was working out what it meant if players guessed – or didn’t guess – the correct location. I wanted players to still have a chance of winning, even if they made some mistakes. Having players uncover clues seemed like the right approach to this problem.
The game went through a couple rounds of user testing, leading to the final game you see here.
